by aQua

Are you looking to excel and grow in your career with unwavering confidence? Do you have that inner critic ringing in your ears having you doubt yourself? Having you question your intelligence and/or your capabilities? Are you comparing yourself to others and thinking that what you’re doing or that your ideas aren’t good enough? Well you are not alone. Women have a tendency to underestimate their capabilities. In this article, we explore 5 ways to bolster confidence and unlock your true potential. By throwing a failure party, applying for jobs you deem yourself unqualified for, embracing the “fake it til you’ll make it” mindset, harnessing the power of visualization, and fearlessly tackling the things you believe you cannot do, you can pave the way for a successful and fulfilling career, so let’s dive in!

5 Ways to Bolster Confidence in women who are in the early stages of their career

1. Throw a Failure Party!

No- you did not read that wrong. Failure is not a reflection of your worth, but a stepping stone to success. it will seem a lot less scary when women who you have admired share their experiences of their own stumbles – or worse – and show not only have they survived, but thrived. One of the best ways to bolster your confidence is to realize that you are NOT alone in the struggle. So the first of the 5 ways to bolster confidence is to throw a failure party! Invite friends, colleagues, mentors, and anyone else you may admire and have them share with the room a short story of one of their greatest failures. Or you could make it more intimate and organize a dinner with a similar crowd and the same intention in mind.

Women have the tendency to fail silently and suffer silently. Take the stigma out of failing by CELEBRATING it. All failure is is INCOMPLETE SUCCESS. Share what you all learned from your failures. What happened as a result of this failure? By reframing failure as an opportunity for growth, you’ll develop the confidence to overcome obstacles and thrive in your career. One of my favorite reframing approaches is redefining FAIL as First Attempt In Learning. Let this failure party be a chance to discuss what you learned, how you grew, what you thought about doing differently and what you got from the experience overall!

2. Apply for the Jobs You Deem Yourself Unqualified For

Embrace the power of self-belief. Not having failed means you haven’t taken enough risks. If you’re not out their taking risks and betting on yourself, then you are depriving yourself of living up to your true potential. Think about your dream job… what is it? Write it down on a piece of paper and apply for that job today. If you don’t know what your dream job is, or if you’re not happy with the industry you are in, then create a “business plan.”

This does not mean to be unrealistic about your capabilities and qualifications, but it is about identifying what it is that you want to do in your professional life. Work on getting to the place where you CAN apply for your dream job, and don’t allow your self-doubts or the critics to inhibit you from taking those bold steps to get there.

As you aim to advance inyour career, forget about the small professional baby steps and lay down some solid stepping stones. If there is a job that you want, take on assignments that would prepare you for it. Then try the “double career jump:” Identify what is the next logical step in your career and apply for the job above that.

Your goals will always be out of reach until you challenge yourself to actually reach for it. By taking the leap, you’ll discover that qualifications are just a starting point and that your potential knows no bounds. The answer is always no if you never ask. So go for the big jobs. Even if you don’t land them the first time, you’ll know what you need to do the next time to succeed.

3. Fake it til You make It: Bolster Confidence from Within

The fact that you’re reading this article alone shows that you’re trying t bolster your confidence. Confidence is not always innate, but it can be cultivated. many of the opportunities you get in your professional life will be new. Chances are they may never have been done before, but don’t be afraid to FAKE IT! You will figure it out along the way.

Commitment and persistence will allow you to do just that. And guess what, you still will likely fail along the way, but you will also pick yourself back up and learn from those failures. Men do this ALL the time. They apply for the jobs that they don’t even meet 50% of the qualifications for. They take on projects that they have minimal experience in. They will start a business half prepared. Why? Because they know they will figure it out along the way.

Women have a tendency to overthink. We are multitaskers by nature; w can be very rational, practical, and we generally want to ‘set ourselves up just right’ before taking that next step. Many of us have this need to be well prepared for the tasks/work at hand. If there is a project that you want to take on but don’t feel experienced for it yet, TAKE IT ON. You will figure it out- I promise. Say “YES” to the projects that will help propel you forward in your career.

4. Visualize and Take the Leap: Clear the Path to Success

Do you know when you’ll know you’re on the right path?… When you’re scared as hell! When you are in hot pursuit of your goals, fear is a natural feeling to experience. What comes with success, and life in general, is learning to force ourselves to move forward, even if it scares the hell out of us. There are two parts of visualization to bolster your confidence: 1. Visualizing the successes and 2. visualizing the possible outcomes.

For the first component, create vivid imagery of you accomplishing your goals: whether it is getting that job, building that business, successfully negotiating that salary and more… try to be as detailed as possible in your visualization: utilize all your senses and make it feel real.

Now for the second part:… it is important to anticipate possible [negative] outcomes. This will help you prepare for what lies ahead. When you visualize what could possibly happen, you can gather the strength and courage to push forward, even when faced with the unknown, bolstering your confidence in your ability to work through it. Picture this: What is the worse case scenario of pursuing this goal? What would “failure” mean in this scenario for you? Then ask yourself, “Can I handle it?” Chances are… YES YOU CAN.

Once you start working through the fears, you will soon discover that what you’re doing is not terrifying after all, or at the very least, you are courageous enough to handle the worst outcomes and your confidence in yourself will GROW.

5. Do the Thing You Think You Cannot Do to Bolster Your Confidence

The greatest growth happens when you step outside your comfort zone. Stepping outside of our comfort zone usually brings those fears to the forefront. Overcoming fears is imperative to bolstering your confidence. It can be extremely empowering and will allow yourself to learn to take stand, find your voice and be heard.

Our fears cause us to overcomplicate and amplify the difficulty of the challenge at hand. So, identify a challenge or task that intimidates you and break it down into smaller, manageable steps. Seek support and guidance from mentors, colleagues, or friends who have faced similar challenges. Take the first step, embrace the uncertainty, and focus on progress rather than perfection. By confronting the things you think you cannot do, you’ll unlock new levels of confidence and resilience, propelling you towards your career goals.

These 5 ways to bolster confidence is a great first guide to utilize and to empower yourself in your career. By implementing these five strategies – throwing a failure party, applying for jobs you think you’re unqualified for, embracing the “fake it til you make it mindset, visualizing and taking the leap, and tackling the things you think you cannot do – you’ll pave the way for a successful and fulfilling professional journey. Remember, confidence is a journey, and with persistence and self-belief, you can achieve greatness. So, take action today, embrace your unique strengths, and fearlessly pursue the career you’ve always dreamed of. Your time to shine is now!
